The Smoke Detector Program in Lethbridge was initially started in 1994. In 2002 the Canadian Home Builders' Association - Lethbridge Region acquired 2 New Sponsors, ENMAX Energy Corporation and ING Insurance Company of Canada, and together with the efforts of the City of Lethbridge Fire Department, we have continued this valuable program. The Smoke Detector Program mandate is to ensure that every family in every home in the City of Lethbridge is protected from fire deaths and injury through the supply and installation of smoke alarms.

Thanks to the generous support of our volunteer committee, ING Insurance Company of Canada and ENMAX, together with the efforts of the Fire Department, we can provide this service to the citizens of Lethbridge.

The program is simple. With the funds from our valued sponsors the Canadian Home Builders Association - Lethbridge Region provides the brochures, coordinates media and promotional materials, including the actual smoke detectors, batteries and fasteners to install the detectors. These are delivered to the City of Lethbridge Fire Department who complete the actual testing and installation of detectors and batteries.

Each spring and fall the City of Lethbridge Fire Department visits homes in a designated area, where firefighters go door to door and offer to test detectors, install units where required and change batteries. The entire program is done at no cost to the homeowner.

Don't wait for the Fire Department to come to your home. Test your Smoke Detector and replace your batteries every six months, using the time change in spring and fall as a reminder.

For more information on the Smoke Detector Program call the Lethbridge Fire Department at (403) 320-3811 or (403) 320-3810 or the CHBA at (403) 328-2288.

Your smoke detector is a round white alarm located on the ceiling.
There is a small test button that is usually coloured. Push the button and hold for several seconds until you hear the alarm sound. If after 15-20 seconds there is no sound, change the battery and repeat.

Your smoke detector may be powered by any of the following sources:
1. Wired in to the house wiring
2. 9-volt battery operation
3. Wired with a 9-volt battery backup
This smoke detector is powered by a 9-volt battery connected to the unit as shown.

* Remember: Never re-install your smoke detector without a fresh battery!

Special thanks to our sponsors:
